At 35, Swiss Roger Federer is the oldest men’s grand slam finalist since Ken Rosewall lost the U.S. Open final in 1974 at the age of 39. Rafael Nadal might be five years younger but has been on tour since his late teens and the effort required for his attritional playing style puts tremendous strain on his body. Most thought the Federer and Nadal era was done, what with Novak Djokovic winning majors left, right and centre and Andy Murray proving to be a dominant force. Add a few talented players coming through and the two legends of the game struggling with injuries, you would have put good money on the Swiss great and the Spanish superstar never meeting again in a Grand Slam final.

And while Roger Federer has been able to rest up after his three-hour semi-final victory over Stan Wawrinka on Thursday, Rafael Nadal must recuperate as best he can after

Roger Federer aims to add his 18th Grand Slam title when he faces Rafael Nadal in the final of the 2017 Australian Open. The long-time and heated Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer rivalry is renewed in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday with both veteran pros hoping to get the first majors title of the year.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, arguably the greatest rivals in tennis history, will collide at a Grand Slam for the first time in over three years during Sunday’s grand finale of the 2017 Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena.

The living legends haven’t met in a Grand Slam final since the 2012 Roland Garros which Nadal won in four sets to improve his head-to-head record in major tournaments to 7-2 against his archival. Since that French Open final, they clashed in two Aussie Open semi-finals matches in 2012 and 2014, both of which were won by Nadal.

The Swiss-Spanish seventeen-year-old rivalry will see its 35th encounter in Melbourne Park, AUS. In the previous 34 matchups, Federer has won 11 and Nadal seized 24 matches.

Both masters coming off their injuries, which made them miss out parts of the 2016 season, have stormed the AusOpen clay, winning six matches each.
